Transit Improvements

Transit Improvements

Jefferson Transit works with the Regional Planning Commission to strategically plan for long-term improvements to the system. Under federal law, the Regional Planning Commission prepares a Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) every five years to serve as a long range, twenty-year plan for the region’s transportation infrastructure. The RPC also creates three-year, fiscally constrained Transportation Improvement Programs (TIPs) to plan for shorter-term projects. This federally mandated planning process ensures that local, state, and federal dollars are spent efficiently and effectively. For more information or to read these plans, please visit the RPC’s website at www.norpc.org.

Jefferson Transit has made many recent system improvements, with more still in the planning stages.

Travel Tools – Riders can now access Shadow, a real-time bus tracking feature, on the JP Transit homepage.
Service Improvements – In April 2015, JP Transit rerouted the W1 Avondale route to provide service for passengers along 4th Street in Westwego.  The Department also reinstated the W6 Gretna Local bus route, which was terminated following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

JP Transit added Saturday service to the W1 Avondale and the W10 Huey P. Long routes in August of 2015.  Additionally, the Department added one bus to the E1 Veterans route on Saturdays and Sundays.

In October 2015, JP Transit changed the schedules for the following routes in order to improve on-time performance and to align service with current and future NORTA schedules: E1 Veterans: Saturday and Sunday service, E2 Airport: Saturday and Sunday service, E3 Kenner Local: Weekday, Saturday and Sunday service, W2 Westbank Expy: Weekday service, W3 Lapalco: Weekday service, and W8 Terrytown: Weekday service.

Vehicle Replacement – JP Transit worked to secure FY2015 grant funding to replace fixed-route buses and paratransit (MITS) vehicles.
Security improvements – JP Transit added replacement camera systems for 28 fixed route vehicles and 13 paratransit vehicles.
